Braking on carbon rims
edco designed and applied on all our wheels a unique Integrated Low Temperature braking surface. This provides improved braking in all weather conditions.
In combination with our own brake pads optimized for our rims you'll get the optimal braking performance.
The most effective braking technique is not to drag the brakes but use a pulsing technique. Hereby you use the front brake for 60% - 70% and 30% - 40% pressure on the rear brake.
Maintenance & Cleaning of our wheels
You can use any cleaner that will not affect epoxy resins. Acetone or denatured alcohol work quite well on the rims but be careful with this since you might risk damaging the decals.
Be careful using degreasers around the bearings, to prevent the bearings wearing out quickly.
What brakepads do I need to use?
Brake Pads for both Tubular and Clincher carbon wheel sets:
To reach optimal performance, edco Carbon Cesso Red brake pads provide the ideal balance of feel and stopping power, and helps to keep rims cool.
Alloy brake pads and carbon:
Do not alternate your same set of pads between rims with alloy and carbon or ceramic braking surfaces, as residual embedded alloy shards could damage the carbon surface.
Ceramic pads and carbon:
Be aware of the fact that most ceramic brake pads contain abrasives that can lead to excessively high brake temperatures and possible carbon rim damage.
Brake Pads for alloy brake surface:
Simply use your standard brake pads.
Brake pads for ceramic brake surface:
For our wheelsets with ceramic brake surface we recommend using the specific edco ceramic brake pads.
Integrated Low Temperature braking system
Our Integrated Low Temperature (ILT) braking system is used on all edco carbon and composite rims. Layered 3K carbon; high-temperature, wear-resistant resin; a proprietary surface finish;
and specially developed brake pads provide a high coefficient
of friction while maintaining stable temperatures across a variety of conditions.
Developed as part of the ILT braking system, our 3K carbon rim bed and brake track provides a stable platform for the ultimate carbon rim – a strong foundation that performs well under the temperature extremes rim braking creates.
How do I clean my brake surface?
If you want to clean your carbon or alloy brake surface without harming the material of the rim or influence the braking performance we recommend to clean your rims with Acetone.
How do I remove the glue of my Tubular wheelset?
If there isn't much glue you can glue the new tire on top of the old glue. Normally this will soften up when it comes in contact with the new glue.
If you want to glue the tire on a clean surface you could use a solvent like benzene.
Don't use a sharp or hard tool to scrape off the glue. Those tools can damage the carbon rim.
What freehub body is used on edco wheels?
All edco road wheels and hubs feature our patented Multisys
freehub body, a design that allows the installation of Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM cassettes without changes or modifications.
The installation keyways on Shimano/SRAM cassettes often bite into the softer aluminum material on the freehub body, making them difficult to install and remove. edco’s patent-pending Antibite system incorporates three hardened steel inserts on the Multisys freehub body, preventing damage to the aluminum.
Can I run a 10 speed SRAM or Shimano drive train on my 11 speed hub?
Yes, you will just need to add a 1.85mm lower cassette spacer. You can pick this part up from most shops or online retailers. Just add the spacer, then cassette, and you're ready to ride!
Are edco wheels 11 speed compatible?
The edco MultiSys freehub body is designed to be compatible with all Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM cassettes from 8 up to 11 speed.
The MultiSys freehub body can also be used on older wheelsets that have been equiped without the MultiSys body. The freehub body can easily be replaced by your local edco dealer.
What kind of hubs does edco use?
edco has designed and built hubs for a number of leading brands for more than 30 years. Precision-machined in Switzerland and hand-assembled in The Netherlands, every road hub employs our patented Multisys freehub body for compatibility with Shimano/SRAM and Campagnolo cassettes. edco-designed bearings mean years of ultra-smooth riding; a 5-point sealing system ensures minimum resistance and maximum protection.
We have the following hub models:
- SuperG FD
- SuperS Track
Did edco develop its own bearings?
Most premium hubs on the market today use ordinary industrial bearings, also known as cartridge bearings. While they offer a balance between performance, life, and cost, they’re designed for a broad range of uses and applications. Bicycle hubs are different, though. Operating at relatively low speeds, they not only require a tight seal against water and dirt, but also must withstand both radial and axial loads. edco has developed its own bearing specification to provide each hub with years of trouble-free, high-performance use. Lubrication, ball and raceway tolerances, seal design: everything is considered and tested – both in the lab and in the real world – before we put them in any edco hub.
Which spokes does edco use?
All edco wheels are build with high quality spokes and nipples from Sapim. We only use two types of spokes making sure to have proven quality throughout our collection. Our spokes of choice for the Optima series are the rigid J-bend CX Race spokes. For the ProSport and AeroSport series we use Sapims aero Straight Pull CX Sprint spoke (DB wheelsets have aero CX Sprint J-bend spokes).
The spokes are secured with Sapim's proven secure lock nipples preventing them to untight while being used.
